In 1981, scientists from the United States and France first recognized the Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS), which was later discovered to be caused by a virus called Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV). HIV breaks down the body's immunity to infections leading to AIDS. The virus can remain hidden in the body for up to 10 years without obvious symptoms or before they develop the disease AIDS, and meanwhile the person can unknowingly infect others. Currently, an estimated 40 million people worldwide are living with HIV and three million die each year from AIDS.
HIV lives in white blood cells and is present in the sexual fluids of humans. It is difficult to catch and is spread primarily through sexual contact, sharing needles or syringes among drug users injecting in blood transfusions and during pregnancy and childbirth (if the mother is infected). Using the blade of another person or have his body tattooed or pierced are also dangerous, but the HIV virus can not be transmitted by shaking hands, kissing, hugging, touching, sneezing, cooking food, or sharing utensils eating or drinking. One can not be infected by saliva, sweat, tears, urine or feces, toilet seats, telephones, swimming pools, or mosquito bites do not cause AIDS. Isolating a known AIDS patient is not only immoral but also absurd.
Most blood banks now screen their products for HIV, and you can protect yourself from dirty needles, allowing just one shot if you see the syringe out of a new unopened package. The simplest safeguard during sex is the proper use of a latex condom. Unroll the condom over the erect penis while withdrawing after ejaculation, hold the condom to leave. Never try to recycle a condom, and a package deal with you, it can be a hassle trying to buy short-term.
HIV is spread most often through anal than vaginal sex because the lining of the rectum is much weaker than the vagina and the condom is sometimes common to tear when used in anal sex. If you have anal sex, only use extra-strong condoms and lubricants special water-based, as oil, petroleum jelly, cream and weaken the condom. During oral sex you must ensure that you do not get semen or menstrual blood in the mouth. A woman runs 10 times greater risk of contracting AIDS to a man than vice versa, and the threat is always greater when another sexually transmitted disease (STD) is present.
The very existence of AIDS requires a fundamental change in human behavior. There is no vaccine or medication that can prevent or cure AIDS, and because the virus mutates frequently, no remedy can never be completely effective. Other STDs such as syphilis, gonorrhea, chlamydia, hepatitis B and herpes are much more common than AIDS and can lead to serious complications such as infertility, but at least it usually can be cured.
Always practice safe sex to prevent sexually transmitted diseases AIDS and others. You never know who is infected or even if you have been infected. It is important to bring the subject before you start making love. Make a joke of it by pulling a condom and ask your new partner, "Hey, you know what this is?" Or, "the condom or mine?" Far from being romantic or embarrassing you and feel more relaxed with the theme of your mind, and is much better than worrying afterwards if you might have been infected. The golden rule is safe sex or no sex.
HIV infection can be detected through a blood test, because the antibodies created by the body to fight the virus can be seen under a microscope. It takes at least three weeks for the antibodies that are produced and in some cases up to six months before they can be collected during a screening test. If you think you may have taken a risk, you should discuss the appropriateness of a test with your doctor. It is always better to know if you are infected in order to be able to avoid infecting other people, for the early treatment of symptoms, and to make realistic plans. If you know someone with AIDS, should be given all the support I can (it is safe to touch, unless blood is present).
